Enkaji began with a simple idea: to create a home surrounded by nature, where family and friends could escape the noise of everyday life and simply enjoy being together.
Set among the rolling Olesekut Hills of Kajiado West, with wide views towards Magadi and the Great Rift Valley, the land had always felt special to the family. There was something about the landscape — the open skies, changing light, wildlife passing through and spectacular sunsets — that made it feel like a place worth sharing.
What started as a family home slowly became Enkaji.
The first cottage was built in 2019, and over time, the property grew organically into the seven-cottage retreat it is today. Each cottage is slightly different, designed to sit naturally within the landscape and to offer guests a sense of privacy, comfort and connection with the outdoors.
The name Enkaji means “home” in the Maasai language. It was a fitting name for a place that was never intended to feel like a conventional hotel. From the beginning, the intention was to create somewhere that felt personal — somewhere guests could arrive as visitors and leave feeling as though they had been welcomed into someone’s home.
Today, Enkaji remains a family-run retreat. The family is closely involved in the experience, from the gardens and design of the property to the food, wellness experiences, hospitality and day-to-day running of the resort. Many of the details that make Enkaji what it is have come directly from the family's own interests, traditions and way of living.
We believe luxury doesn't have to mean excess. Sometimes it is a quiet morning with birdsong outside your window. A long lunch made from recipes passed down through the family. A walk through the hills as the sun begins to set. A conversation around the fire that lasts a little longer than planned.
Enkaji is a place to slow down, reconnect and enjoy the simple things — surrounded by nature, but close enough to Nairobi to make the journey effortless.
